War Widows Association felicitation message for Dr.Mohini Giri
The President, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam presenting Padma Bhushan to Dr. (Smt.) V. Mohini Giri (Social Activist), at an Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on March 23, 2007.
“ The Guild of Service congratulates Dr.V.Mohini Giri on receiving the Padma Bhushan Award announced on 26th January, 2007 for her contribution to the Nation in the field of Social Work”

Dr. Giri has been pioneer in the cause of empowering the marginalized and has traveled the length and breadth of the country through difficult geographical terrain into militancy affected areas, riot affected cities at considerably risk to her health and physical security. This has been the case since she began her work 40 years ago at the young age of 26. She has given a new dimension to social work in India; as developmental work where the marginalized are seen as architects of their own destiny and not as beneficiaries of dole.To this end she began a number of schemes like computer literacy, vocational training, auxiliary nurses training course, family counseling centers etc. to ensure that the marginalized can take control of their lives.

“As an integral part of the women’s movement I was party to the creation of the Commission. When the First Commission was formed we had great hopes for it. But I soon realized that if this had to be an effective public body and not merely one of the many teeming institution, it had be far more dynamic and vigorous.”

“When I took over as Chairperson of the second Commission in 1995, I came with many dreams. And I feel our one achievement is that today, I have women who come to me and say: ‘Mohini , this is not your Commission , this is our Commission .’ This identification with the Commission is a source of great strength.”

‘My dream is to get all women across party lines together to work towards action-oriented programmes that will ensure speedy justice to all women in India who need it. No woman must be treated like a Second - class citizen.’
